Abercrombie & Kent: Norway & Denmark: A Fjordland Journey
Day 1 Oslo, Norway
Arrive in Oslo, the capital of Norway, where you are met and privately transferred to your hotel. Later, enjoy a welcome dinner at your hotel’s restaurant.
Experience life along the scenic Oslo fjord, starting with a guided visit to Vigeland Park, a Scandinavian cultural treasure comprising over 200 granite, bronze and wroughtiron sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland. Then, explore the Munch Museum to peruse its vast collection of artworks, texts, letters, photos and personal possessions bequeathed to the city by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, best known for his iconic modern Expressionist work, The Scream. Proceed to privately tour the cutting-edge Oslo Opera House and opt for a walk along its mountain-inspired sloping roof. Then, enjoy some time at leisure to discover the city on your own, perhaps stopping for lunch at the Sanguine Brasserie with its views of the stunning fjord.
Rise early for a flight to Alesund, a fishing town on Norway’s rugged west coast. Upon arrival, begin your explorations of stunning Fjordland in charming Alnes on the island of Godoya, which you reach via underwater sea tunnels. Marvel at the village’s classic boathouses and lighthouse and note how dwellings were built close together for protection against the sometimes-fierce coastal climate. Stop into the lighthouse’s charming on-site café to savor a Norwegian vafle (waffle) or svele (pancake) with coffee and peruse the local artworks on display. Return to Alesund, where after lunch in a local restaurant, you enjoy a guided walking tour to view its distinctive architectural style born of devastation. On a stormy night in January 1904, a fire raged through the town, destroying 850 houses and leaving 10,000 people homeless. Over the next four years, the dwellings were rebuilt in an Art Nouveau style with a local folkloric twist, sporting turrets, spires and medieval ornamentation, including dragons. At day’s end, continue to your hotel.
Begin your day by enjoying one of these Design Your Day activities.
Kayak a Tranquil Fjord accompanied by an expert instructor, stopping in bays and inlets, and watching for seabirds and other aquatic life.
Hike the Mountainous Terrain of the Fjord with a guide who reveals the flora and fauna of the Nordic forest.
Sample Tasty Cuisine With Your Hotel’s Chef as he explains his culinary philosophy and shares some of his favorite cooking techniques.
Afterward, relax and soak up the atmosphere of this idyllic fjordland retreat. This evening, enter a traditional Norwegian lavvo (tent) to savor dinner made from local ingredients and served al fresco around a roaring fire.
Journey along Storfjord, taking in the extraordinary scenery and traversing the winding Eagle Road, which carries you up for views over rugged coastal terrain. View Seven Sisters Falls and gaze down on the many cruise ships that traffic the fjord far below. Listen as your guide explains how glaciers created the fjords over countless centuries. Next, board a traditional ferry for a panoramic cruise along the wondrous Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Disembark in Hellysylt and continue toward the picturesque village of Loen, where you enjoy lunch accompanied by stunning views at a skylift restaurant. Then, check in to your waterside hotel and enjoy time at leisure before sampling one of Norway’s most sumptuous buffets.
Rise early for a drive along a route that includes a ferry crossing of the Sognefjord and a jaunt through the Laerdal tunnel, the world’s longest road tunnel. Arrive in the tiny village of Flam, located on the shores of the Aurlandsfjord, which you experience by RIB (rigid inflatable boat), and then cruise into the spectacular Naeroyfjord to Laegdafossen — a breathtaking waterfall in the heart of this UNESCO-listed natural wonder — the perfect vantage point for views into the spectacular fjord. Along the way, enjoy tales of the region’s history shared by your personal guide. Disembark in Gudvangen and enter the historic Viking village of Njardarheimr to view reconstructed Viking-style houses built using the tools and techniques of the age. Look on as the Viking style of combat is recreated for your enjoyment. Then, visit the home of the resident Viking chieftain, your host for a private meal prepared with traditional Viking methods, such as spit roasting and smoking, on an A&K-exclusive experience. Savor dishes flavored with the kinds of herbs and spices the Vikings brought back to the region from their seafaring forays. Afterward, continue to Bergen, a UNESCO World Heritage city, and check in at your hotel.
Travel outside Bergen to visit Fantoft, a stave church dating to the 13th century. Proceed to the Hanseatic Museum and Schotstuene in Bergen, two museums where you see how the merchants from the Hanseatic League traded stock, fish and grains from the 14th through 18th centuries. Continue to the Bergen Fish Market to enjoy a sampling of traditional local products. This evening, gather for dinner at a local restaurant.
Fly to Copenhagen, enchanting capital of Denmark, to discover its elegant contrast of medieval and modern architecture and examples of world-famous Danish design. Upon arrival, enjoy a typical Danish lunch at iconic Nyhavn Harbour, followed by a boating experience through the canals of the city, listening as your local guide introduces you to the Danish capital and its history. Settled as a small stone-walled fishing village in the 11th century, learn how Copenhagen grew into a sea-trading port city often in conflict with the powerful Hanseatic League and later a center for elegant architecture throughout the Renaissance.
Venture outside Copenhagen to discover Frederiksborg Castle, former home of Denmark’s royal family. Discover five centuries of Danish history through its rich collection of paintings, furniture and applied art. Continue to the internationally known Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. View its 4,000-plus pieces, mainly paintings and sculptures, in a minimalist but inviting space filled with art juxtaposed with windows offering views onto the lovely Danish landscape. Then, enjoy some time at leisure, free to explore the museum’s lovely garden and on-site restaurant. This afternoon, savor a relaxing “hygge Sunday” on a private visit with a local Dane’s family. Share afternoon tea and conversation with them, finding out how the Danes learn early in life to protect their social customs, on this A&K-exclusive experience. Return to your hotel and later enjoy a farewell dinner at iconic Tivoli Gardens.

This elegant Dutch Renaissance structure straddles three small islands and has all the trappings of a fairytale castle, but it was gainfully employed as royal residence and setting for important ceremonial events from the 1600s to the 1850s. It now serves as the National Museum of History and is best known for its outstanding collection of portraits, the largest of its kind in Denmark. Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city. Here, Scandinavia's tallest building twists its way skyward, gazing down over the vast Öresund bridge – both modern engineering marvels that reflect multicultural Malmö's progressive outlook.
Focusing on the area around Stortorget (the town square) and lively Lilla Torget (the little square) Malmö's Old Town is a gorgeous warren of cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses.
Located about 2.5km northwest of the Old Town, buzzing, bayside Västra Hamnen represents the modern face of Malmö. It's a popular spot to stroll, sip coffee and browse boutiques, but mostly people come to marvel at the Öresund bridge and the Turning Torso
After Malmö we continue to Lund, founded by the Danes around 1000 AD and once the seat of the largest archbishopric in Europe, Lund is the second-oldest city in Sweden. It's also one of its loveliest, surrounded by beech trees and glowing with an impressive architectural legacy. Its magnificent, medieval old town is centered on its strikingly beautiful cathedral. Radiating around it is the country's oldest, most prestigious university (c 1666). Perhaps ironically, the university keeps Lund young, its vibrant, engaged youth driving a lively arts and culinary scene.

Copenhagen Walking tour in the pursuit of Hygge – 4 Hours
Hygge is as Danish as pork roast and it goes far in illuminating the Danish soul. In essence hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life in the company of good people. The warm glow of candlelight is also hygge. Friends and family – well that’s hygge too.
In the summertime, hygge is spending time in the sun, over a beer at the pier, a picnic in one of the city parks or just hanging out with good friends in one of Copenhagen’s many picturesque and historical back yards.
This 4-hour walking tour will highlight what hygge is all about. The tour starts by exploring the area around the Latin quarters an around the pedestrian street Strøget.
The Latin Quarter is one of the most entertaining areas of Denmark's capital city, with a young-spirited undertone around the vicinity of Copenhagen University. The Latin Quarter is well known for its hang-out spots, alternative shopping and 17th-century architecture.
Part of Danish hygge is having coffee with friends, so we will pick up a cup of coffee to go and a cinnamon roll at Sankt Peders Bakery, Copenhagen oldest bakery which was founded in 1652.
We continue our tour by visiting the church of our Lady. The Copenhagen Cathedral in its present shape is an unpretentious building in Neo-Classicist style designed by the architect C.F. Hansen. It is situated close to the University of Copenhagen. An inside visit to the Round Tower in included. It was built as part of the Trinity Complex, named after the Holy Trinity and designed to accommodate three things: the observatory at the top of the tower, the library on the floor above the Trinity Church and of course the church itself. From its vantage point you will be able to peak into some of Copenhagen’s old, historical and cozy court yards before we head over to the Kings Garden, a popular green spot in the city center.
Basis: Private tourCopenhagen Jewish tour – 4 Hours
Although never large in numbers, the Jews in Denmark have nevertheless had a substantial and important influence on Danish culture and history. The sights on your tour includes The Round Tower with its golden Hebrew inscriptions; the statue of the world famous Danish Jewish Nobel Prize winner, Niels Bohr; and the Trinitatis church where the Torah scrolls from the Copenhagen Synagogue were hidden during the Second World War and were thus saved from destruction.
You will be informed of the present-day Jewish community, its size and the various components that went into its making. The story of the five dark years under Nazi occupation, the deeds of the Danes and their king, Christian X will not be forgotten.
The Danish Jewish Museum, designed by world famous architect Daniel Libeskind, opened in 2004 and is a must-see for anyone interested in the Jews of Denmark. Located in the center of Copenhagen, the museum is a great starting point for exploring Jewish history in Denmark. The museum presents 400 years of Danish Jewish history, including the rescue and deportation of the Danish Jews in 1943. Christianshavn & Dragør tour – 4 Hours
Narrow cobbled streets, Michelin-starred restaurants and cozy cafes along the canal. Just across the bridge Knippels Bro is Christianshavn, officially part of Copenhagen city center. Christianshavn is a much-desired area for Copenhageners to live in. And it is easy to see why. It is central, full of bars and restaurants and has a unique maritime atmosphere.
Dragør was founded in the 12th century, and it grew quickly as a fishing port. During the medieval period it was an international marketplace for Hanseatic merchants who came each year to buy herring. In the early sixteenth century, King Christian II invited a group of farmers from the Netherlands - at the time, a more agriculturally advanced nation than Denmark - to settle here to produce food for the royal household. You still find many Dutch names on the doors in Dragør. The town center is very idyllic with its characteristic yellow painted houses, thatched straw roofs and cobblestone streets, plus a charming harbor that is still an active fishing port.
Christiansborg Palace is located on the tiny island of Slotsholmen and houses Denmark's Parliament. It is the Prime Minister's residence and where the Queen of Denmark receives visiting royalty and heads of state in its royal reception rooms. In the Marble Hall, see the incredible, colorful tapestries displaying Danish and world history over the past 1,000 year.

In the Middle Ages there were approximately 800 stave churches throughout Norway, today only 30 are left standing.
On return back to the city centre of Bergen, explore by foot the famous Bryggen harbour front - the colorful old Hanseatic merchant buildings from the middle Ages. Destroyed by a large fire that wreaked havoc, the area was rebuilt in 1702. Now a protected area and listed on the Unesco World Heritage List, the narrow alleyways that run between the rows of houses made for an enchanting stroll that will take you back in time.
Your next stop is the Mt. Fløien Funicular station. The Fløibanen funicular takes you up to a height of 320 meters above sea level.
